Montague Folding Bikes - F.A.Q.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How does the Montague compare to other bicycles that fold?
A. The other bicycles on the market that fold generally have small kid-sized wheels and require substantial disassembly to fold the bike. Many of these designs also cut the frame tubes, which forces the tubes to lose their torsional rigidity. The small circus-sized wheels on most folding bikes are not designed for off-road riding. The Montague design is the only one that successfully combines a full-size frame, high-performance, and strength with a single compact folding feature.

Q. How much do Montague bikes weigh?
A. Montague bikes weigh 29 lbs. Montague is continuously improving their bikes and components, which helps to reduce their weight.

Q. In terms of performance, how does a Montague bicycle compare to non-folding bicycles?
A. The performance of Montague bicycles is comparable to that of well-known, high-performance, non-folding bicycles that are in the same price range.

Q. How does a Montague bicycle fold? Can you tell me about Montagues F.I.T.™ technology and how it's different from other folding technologies?
A. F.I.T. stands for Folding Integrated Technology and is unique to Montague in the folding bicycle industry. Here's how it works: Via our patented F.I.T. system, the bicycle frame utilizes the seat tube as the pivot point frame, secured by a quick release lever, which allows the front frame to pivot around and fold neatly into the rear frame. Unlike other folding bikes on the market that sever frame tubes to accomplish folding, thereby weakening the structural integrity of the frame, no tubes are cut or altered on our bikes, giving you rock solid performance.

Q. Are any tools needed?
A. No, all Montague bicycles are designed to be folded and unfolded without the use of tools.

Q. Is the frame strength or rigidity compromised by the folding feature?
A. No. The Montague bike frame is stronger than other folding bikes and as strong as most non-folding bikes. How? The folding element of these bikes compromises nothing, as no tubes are altered to allow the bikes to fold. Montague bikes pivot at the seat post allowing them to fold, whereas other folding bikes pivot in the middle of the top tube, which severs and weakens the frame.

Q. Could the bicycle fold while being ridden?
A. Not a chance. A safety lip is engineered into the folding mechanism, which automatically locks the frame into place when it unfolds, making the bike virtually impossible to fold while in the riding position.

Q. What is the folded size of the bicycle?
A. Approximately 3 ft x 3 ft x 1 ft. (Varies slightly depending on frame size).

Q. Who needs a Montague bicycle that folds?
A. Everyone. The most common use of Montague bikes is for convenient and safe storage in a closet, car trunk, private plane, boat, or RV. These bicycles there is no need to install a paint scratching roof rack on your car. A number of owners also ride Montagues because they are so easy to travel with on trains and commercial airline flights. Finally, many owners find them extremely convenient for commuting because they store easily at work and in small urban apartments. Since the performance of Montague bikes is equal to and in many cases better than that of non-folding bicycles, there is no reason why everyone should not have one.

Q. Do Montague bicycles follow the same sizing parameters as non-folding bikes?
A. Yes. Montague bicycles follow the same standard sizing as full-size, non-folding bikes. Montague utilizes a center-to-top measurement system, measuring from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube.

Q. Are folding pedals available? Why aren't they included with the bike?
A. Folding pedals are not used as original equipment because they are not readily available at any dealer for replacement or service. We use quality pedals and give consumers the option of ordering Montague folding pedals as an accessory. Note: when ordering folding pedals, you will receive the standard set of pedals as well.

Q. Is a kickstand available?
A. Yes, standard kickstands are available. If you would like like to purchase one, please let us know.

Q. Does Montague custom-make any folding bicycles?
A. No. Montagues bikes are shipped as they are shown online. We do not mix and match components, however all components are industry standard and can be modified per your liking at any local bike shop.

Q. Can a Montague bicycle be checked on commercial flights? How?
A. Yes, all Montague bicycles can be taken on commercial flights. We sell the Airliner I case which allows all of our Montague single bicycles to be checked as airline luggage. With heightened airport security in place, please contact your airline in advance as they each have different rules and regulations for checking luggage.

Q. How well do Montague bicycles hold up in a saltwater environment?
A. When on a boat, we suggest that the bike be stowed below deck in its water resistant carrying case. The clear-coated special four-layer paint helps protect the chromoly frames from rusting. Montague bikes are very popular among sailors and powerboat owners.

Q. Do racks and fenders work on Montague bikes?
A. Absolutely. A seat-post mount rack can be added to all models. In addition, the rear triangles on all of the models have rack bosses to accommodate touring-style racks.

Q. Why should I choose Montague bicycles over the competitors bikes?
A. While our competitors carry decent bicycles, our bikes are full-size and high performing. Montague bikes were designed to sustain various terrains without compromising on performance or comfort. Many folding bikes have circus-sized wheels, meaning that when they go over any kind of terrain that is not perfectly smooth, the rider will certainly feel it. Montague bikes are the only folding bicycles that have the F.I.T. system. In addition, Montague bikes are made with the same components that you will find in non-folding bicycles, thereby making them much easier and more economical to service and fix if needed. We find that many people come to us when they are looking for a full-size, high-performance bike and they want to progress from small-wheel folding bikes.

Q. Is there a warranty on your bicycles? What does it cover and how long does it last?
A. For the original owner of a Montague bicycle, there is a one-year warranty available for the components, and a limited lifetime warranty for the bicycle frame.

Q. What about finding and purchasing replacement parts?
A. All Montague bicycles use standard equipment and components that any of the 6,000+ bike shops in the USA either have in stock or can get easily.

Q. How often should I get my Montague bike tuned?
A. Your Montague bike should be tuned as often as you would tune a non-folding bike, approximately every 60-90 days, depending on how often you are riding your new bicycle.
